Jarrolds of Norwich is an independent department store that was founded in 1770 and employs over 450 people. Our interior and graphic design teams created a new food hall for the lower ground floor to consolidate and enhance the store’s reputation as the premium independent destination for shoppers in the region by offering an experience that goes beyond transactional retail.

The new, premium food hall design needed to function as a social hub, encouraging shoppers to linger, giving casual shoppers a reason to cross the threshold and increasing average spend. Conscious of Jarrolds’ iconic reputation in the east of England, we knew that this new space needed to appeal to shoppers and diners with a wide geographical spread as well as tourists to the historic city of Norwich.

Our teams installed a central bar and delicatessen area to draw in customers and improve average transaction value and created a system of signage built of copper to ensure stand-out. We then incorporated retail elements to combine eating, drinking and shopping, using a sophisticated lighting system, category branding and signage to highlight specific hero products.

We are proud of our ongoing relationship with Jarrolds and have designed two further food and drink spaces, The Exchange, a restaurant featuring wood-fired pizza, fresh pasta and salad and an extensive wine list and The Bay Seafood Bar on the first floor. We look forward to continuing to work with the business on forthcoming projects.
